In some Latin American countries, especially Venezuela and Colombia, the Bocadillo is the most iconic item. This sweet snack is prepared with panela (sugar cane) and very ripe guava. It is cooked in water over low heat until it is thick and a little chewy.
Guava, remembers the researcher, is an antioxidant, rich in calories, provides vitamin C, improves the digestive system, helps prevent diabetes, regulates blood pressure and helps maintain brain functions, among other properties.
